　　　Jazz is a music of many moods, and far from the least of these is the romantic mood, which is precisely what this album is concerned with.

　　　We are decidedly not referring to that strange concoction know as “mood music,” consisting of such elements as gushing strings by the hundreds and arrangements knee-deep in syrup. The material at hand here is jazz: the mood is the deeply emotional one that can be created when outstanding musicians turn their attention to the beauty and tenderness that is one of the fundamentals of jazz. These are ballads – moving at a relaxed tempo, but certainly not dragging. They include, as a matter of fact, some of the very best ballads in the long catalogue of American popular music, as indicated by the fact that such composers as Richard Rodgers, Kurt Weill, Harold Arlen, Hoagy Carmichael are among those represented.

　　　These love songs, carefully culled from various Riverside LPs, can be listened to as the lyrical expression of tender musical ideas by superior jazz improvisers. Or they can be put to use as an exceptional type of mood music: suitable as an important part of a back ground that includes candle-light and such. But even lovers as oblivious to the outside world as the two pictured on the cover of this album are apt to find it hard to avoid paying some attention to the music being played here. Whether the music proves an aid to romance or a distraction is entirely a matter of personal reaction. All we can do is to supply the music and to assure you that it, at least, is just about guaranteed to satisfy.
