4. Hot-Rock Rock
5. Darktown Strutters Ball
6. Slugger’s Swings Out
Of course, the wonderful, fun-filled piano music on this record isn’t actually being played by the strange-looking fellow you see on the album cover. (But don’t say anything like that when Slugger Ryan himself is around to hear it!). Ryan is one of many famous marionettes created by the nimble brain and hands of Bill Baird and his wife Cora. Their people and animals have performed on Broadway and in night clubs, and are best known for their many appearances on such regular television programs as the Ed Sullivan n and Jack Paar shows, and on TV spectaculars like Art Carney’s “Peter and the Wolf.”
Music has always been an important part of the Baird performance, and Slugger has gained many fans by his delightful way of playing old favorite songs like Maple Leaf Rag. He does his version of that number on this record, along with other well-loved tunes like Darktown Strutters Ball, Tiger, Rag Melancholy Baby and St. Louis Blues – plus some other composed specially for this unusual (to say the least) piano star.

1. The Sun, the Moon & the Stars
2. Jack and the Beanstalk
3. The Red Shoes
Side 2
1. The Beauty and the Beast
2. The Magic Fishbone
3. The Happy Prince
“The Singing Lady” who tells the six delightful fairy tales that make up this Wonderland album has been one of the most beloved of story-tellers and singers to two generations of American children.
More than just an unusually charming performer, Ireene Wicker is also a gifted writer with a keen understanding of what most appeals to children. Thus, she not only is “The Singing Lady,” but also originated the idea and wrote the many scripts for that enchanting radio program. Another nationally famous program, “Ireene Wicker’s Music Plays,” also helped to make her a highly important part of the lives of the nation’s children, and in 1960 she continues to delight juvenile audiences, now over the ABC-Television network.
Miss Wicker has won countless newspaper and magazine polls and “distinguished service” awards for the consistently high quality and entertainment value of her programs, and has also written many songs, plays and books for children. It is our great pleasure (and your pleasure, too) to welcome “The Singing Lady” to the family of famous Riverside “Wonderland” artists.

Two fascinating albums – “It’s Nice to Be Nice” (RLP-1429) and “Marcella, the Chicken Who Sang Opera” (RLP-1430) – serve to introduce Nadine Lewis into the family of Riverside “ Wonderland” artists.
Miss Lewis not only sings on these highly unusual records, but has also written the delightful story of Marcella (which has original music by the talented pianist-organist-composer, Paul Renard), and the words to the brad-new ‘good manners’ songs on “It’s Nice to Be ice” (with music by John Cali).
Nadine Lewis began working with and entertaining children as a mother and as nursery school teacher – certainly two of the very best ways of discovering just how much your singing and story-telling appeals to the most critical audience in the world. Miss Lewis, who studied both music and education at Miami University, has also worked in summer stock (appearing in 14 productions at St. John Terrell’s Music Circus in Miami in 1951), has been a musical therapist, has studied opera with Daniel Wolf, and is scheduled to make her Broadway debut in the 1960-61 season.

Cyril Ritchard: Alice in Wonderland, Vol. 1
Narrated by Cyril Ritchard, music by Alec Wilder
Side 1 Chapter 1 – Down the Rabbit-Hole with music by Alec Wilder.
Side 2 Chapter 2 – The Pool of Tears with music by Alec wilder.
Certain stories play a vital role in the early, formative years of many generations of children – and none more so than the beloved Lewis Carroll classic, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” Many of us still clearly recall the wonderful Carroll characters: the White Rabbit, the Mock turtle, the Mad Hatter, and all the rest.
This richly rewarding children’s story has been recorded in irs entirety by Wonderland Records. Recognizing that much of the appeal and value of “Alice” lies in the witty and whimsical details, it was decided not to abridge or excerpt this material, but instead to present the several compete adventures that make up the story in a series of separate recorded ‘volumes.’
“Alice in Wonderland”(to call it by the shorter title everyone insists on using) is narrated and sung by the income\parable Cyril Ritchard, star of stage and TV, and long a favorite of all ages. Your children will surely remember his delightfully menacing performance as Captain Hook, doing battle with Mary Martin in both the stage and television presentations of “Peter Pan.”
Original music composed by Alec Wilder and played by the New York Woodwind Quintet introduces each chapter (and also turns several of the famous Carroll poems into wonderful songs for Mr. Ritchard to sing) with an imaginative charm that fully captures the mood of the marvelous, immortal book that was written in the 1860s by an Oxford University mathematics professor and will always be a memorable part of childhood.

Cannonball Adderley: A Child’s Introduction to Jazz
Narrated by Julian “Cannonball” Adderley.
Side 1
1. Introduction- Background (African Drums; Work Songs and Blues; Ragtime)
- Jazz in New Orleans (King Oliver, Sidney Bechet;George Lewis) –
Jazz in Chicago (Jelly Roll Morton; Ma Rainey; New Orleans Rhythm Kings;
Bix Beiderbecke – Louis Armstrong – Birth of Big Band Jazz (Fletcher Henderson) – Fats Waller.
2. Duke Ellington – Coleman Hawkins – The Swing Era:
Big Bands and Small Groups – Beginnings of Modern Jazz (Thelonious Monk) –
M0dern Jazz Today (examples by Nat Adderley, sonny Rollins, Bill Evans,
Woody Herman Orchestra, Johnny Griffin, Adderley Quintet) Conclusion.
The story of jazz is the story of an exciting and truly American art form – a music bursting with the vitality of American life. Characterized by a regular beat and a direct emotional appeal, jazz can – if properly presented – have deep fascination and rich meaning for young children from the time they first begin to show an interest in music.
To insure such proper presentation, we have enlisted the aid of one of today’s most famous jazz musicians – Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, who is also noted as a highly articulate and well-informed writer in this field. His commentary is neither an over-formal history nor a technical ‘music lesson.’ Instead, it is an easy-going, conversational discussion of the highlights of the jazz story in terms of the major styles and great performers from New Orleans up to the present – illustrated at every step of the way by excerpts from the celebrated Riverside catalogue.
Included are such notable jazz names as Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Fats Waller, Jelly roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins, Sidney Bechet, Thelonious Monk, and Cannonball himself.
There have been precious attempts to present jazz to young listeners – but never before has there been such a comprehensive and authoritative introduction to this important American music as that contained in this uniquely valuable album.

Moira Shearer: A Child’s Introduction to Ballet
Narrated by Moira Shearer played by The Sinfonia of London, conducted by John Hollingswarth.
Side 1 Swan Lake
Side 2 Sleeping Beauty
Ballet can be one of the most fascinating and richly rewarding for children of all art forms. Made up of dance and pantomime – both of which have such great appeal for even the very youngest – it would seem “made to order” for children. Yet all to often children shy away (or are kept away) from ballet, largely because of adults who consider it “arty” or pretentious or too sophisticated.
This album, designed to introduced both the melodic and story-telling values of ballet, is also ideally suited for overcoming any such prejudices. It makes use of two of the most famous and most delightful of all ballets: SLEEPING BEAUTY, a story that all know and love; and SWAN LAKE, a tale involving a young prince, a lovely girl and a wicked magician – elements of sure-fire appeal.
MOIRA SHEARER, one of the world’s greatest ballerinas and long a star of Great Britain’s famous Sadler’s Wells Ballet, tells both stories. Her narration describes and explains in clear, direct and charming fashion all the musical ‘pictures’ painted by the various themes. The music for both ballets is of course the work of the great 19th century Russian composer, Tchaikovsky, and it is played in its entirety and with all its enchanting sweep and grace, by the Sinfonia of London, conducted by John Hollingsworth.

RLP-1442 Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin:
A. A. Milne’s The House at Pooh Corner
With Ian Carmichael as Pooh, Denise Bryer as Christopher Robin, Hugh Lloyd ‘Tigger), Penny Morrell (Pidlet), Terry Norris (Eeyore), Rosemary Adam (Kanga), Tom Chatto (Rabbit), Rex Garner (Owl) Music by H. Fraser Simpson)
Side 1
1. I Could Spend a Happy Morning; What Shall We Do About Poor Little Tigger; This Warm and Sunny Spot; I Like His Way of Talking; I Lay on My Chest; Here Lies a Tree
2. Now We Are Six (Selections read and sung by Dick Bentley)
“What about that story you were going to tell me about what happened to Pooh?”, Christopher Robin asked his father one day.
Since his father was A. A. MILNE, who had already written one book about the remarkable stuffed bear named “Winnie-the-Pooh,” it was a very logical question. And a very fortunate one, too, for it led to the wonderful and now-classic stories gathered together in 1928 as “The House at pooh corner.” Stories about Christopher Robin himself, and Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Owl, Kang, Rabbit . . . and don’t forget Eeyore, the donkey (please don’t forget him, his feelings are so easily hurt). And so it led in turn to this record, which brings all these irresistible beings to bouncy, fun-filled life, led by Ian Carmichael in the star role (“Is a ‘star’ something good to eat?” Pooh might ask) of Winnie-the-Pooh, and with wonderfully appropriate music specially written for the occasion by H. Fraser Simpson.
Side 2 of the record is pretty wonderful, too, for it contains some of the poems, both realistic (?) and fantastical, that Milne wrote for his son (lucky Christopher Robin!), that were published in another very popular book titled “Now We Are six” and that now – as read and sung (with new original music settings) by Dick Bentley, can now be enjoyed by all (lucky all!).

A Child’s Introduction to Historical American Speeches
Side 1
1. Patrick Henry: “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death….” (read by Barrett Clark)
2. George Washington: Farewell Address (read by John Dirks)
3. Daniel Webster: Reply to Senator Haynes (read by Barrett Clark)
Side 2
1. Abraham Lincoln: Gettysburg Address ad Second Inaugural Address (read by John Dirks)
2. Woodrow Wilson: For a League of Nations (read by Barrett Clark)
3. Franklin D. Roosevelt: First Inaugural Address (read by read by John Dirks)
History, when offered as a dry recital of dates and places, can be an unfortunately dull matter. This is not only all won but quite unnecessary: nothing is more dramatic and fascinating than history properly presented – particularly the exciting story of the birth and continuing growth of this country.
Many American leaders have been great orators and phrase-makers, and the sound of their inspiring words is one of the best ways of making the story of American leaders have been great orators and phrase-makers, and the sound of their inspiring words is one of the best ways of making the story of America spring to vivid and exciting life. This album opens with Patrick Henry’s pre-Revolutionary War “Speech Delivered to the Virginia Convention of Delegates’, at Williamsburg, Va., on March 23, 1775 (“Give me liberty or give me death …”), and ends with the ‘First Inaughural Address’ of Franklin D. Roosevelt in Washington on March 4, 1933 (“We have nothing to fear but fear itself …”)
In between are five other selected highlights of American speech-making: the ‘Farewell Address’ sent to Congress on Sept. 17, 1796 by George Washington; silver \tongued Daniel Webster, who according to legend once out-argued the Devil himself, in his famous ‘Reply to Hayne’ delivered in the U.S. Senate on Jan. 26, 1830; Abraham Lincoln’s ‘Gettysburg Address’ (Nov. 19, 1863) and ‘Second Inaugural Address’ (March 4, 1865); and ‘For a League of Nations,’ delivered at Versailles, France, on Jan. 25, 1919.
Barrett Clark and John Dirks alternate in forceful interpretations of these historic speeches.

This album might perhaps be described, using a currently popular term, as a “sing-along” – specifically a folksong sing-along for children. For much of the fun and attractiveness of this extremely warm-hearted, fun-filled and enjoyable record comes from the hearty participation of the children in TOM GLAZER’s audience, as they join in with him in the verses of such familiar favorites as Jimmie Crack Corn and Skip to My Lou, and as try also answer his questions and laugh at his jokes.
The fact is, of course, that the art of getting children to join the performer in the musical fun (and it is certainly an art) pre-dates the recent sing-along fad and will undoubtedly live on long after it subsides. Folksongs have a particularly strong attraction for children, and several outstanding folksingers are noted for their ability to lead a young audience into the community-sing spirit: Oscar Brand (who is represented on Wonderland in a happy recording of a Town Hall children’s concert – RLP 1438), Pete Seeger, and of course Tom Glazer who demonstrates so well on the present album this art of captivating children with voice and guitar.
Included here are thirteen selections, among them Jennie Jenkins, Put Your Finger in the Air, Pick a Bale, Hush Little Baby, all calculated to have the audience at home joining in with the world-famous signer and his active on-the-record vocal assistants.

Cyril Ritchard: Alice in Wonderland, Vol. 3
Narrated by Cyril Ritchard, music by Alec Wilder
Side 1 Chapter 5 Advice from a Caterpillar
Side 2 Chapter 6 Pip and Pepper
Certain stories play a vital role in the early, formative years of many generations of children – and none more so than the beloved Lewis Carroll classic, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” Many of us still clearly recall the wonderful Carroll characters: the White Rabbit, the Mock turtle, the Mad Hatter, and all the rest.
This richly rewarding children’s story has been recorded in its entirety by Wonderland Records.

VIVIEN LEIGH is one of Britain’s most enchanting actresses, and has been an internationally celebrated star ever since she first appeared on the screen as the dashing heroine of “Gone With the Wind.” Her great versatility as an actress has never been more clearly in evidence than it is on this album – and a companion recording of The Tale of PETER RABBIT (RLP 1434). On both of these she reveals herself to be a most charming and fascinating guide for children, as she narrates the world’s most famous and beloved rabbit stories.
BENJAMIN BUNNY was written as a successor to Peter Rabbit, and between them these two stories have insured immortality for their author. BEATRIX POTTER. Ever since 1902, children have delighted In these tales, and in these dramatized recorded versions they are sure to continue to captivate young audiences for a long time to come. Benjamin, in case you don’t know it, is Peter’s cousin, and Peter himself, as well as his family and old Mr. McGregor, are all on hand on this record. (Side 2 here is devoted to The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies, the third Potter book, which features the same character – plus Miss Thomasina Tittlemouse!)
Since nothing could improve on the original Beatrix Potter words ,they have been used throughout these acted-out versions. And in addition, there are spritely original songs (words by David Croft; music by Cyril Ornadel – who also conducts the orchestra) for Benjamin and Peter and the others to sing.

The celebrated Fables of La Fontaine, written over three hundred years ago, provide a most entertaining link to the great Aesop, whose tales are known to children of all ages. Like Aesops fables, these French classics dip enchantingly into the world of animals to arrive at moral points that are eternally accurate and all too human.
In this album, the story of The grasshopper and the Ant and eight others are, for the first time, presented in both French and English – so that they provide a most charming and quite painless introduction to the French language.
SYLVIE ST. CLAIR has not previously directed her talents towards children, but her name and personality is well-known to television and night club audiences throughout the United States and Europe. Her translations of the French fables are simple and clear, and her readings are enhanced by some delightful original music (written by Miss St. Clair, arranged by Bob Dorough, and played by Dorough on piano and Al Schackman on guitar).
Miss St. Clair’s deft and light touch in both languages and her natural sense of comedy help to help make this unique presentation of these classic tales one of those rarities among children’s records – an album that is truly both educational and entertaining.

This sing-along, dance-Along, and listen-along album is drawn from the most popular songs sung by children in Israel today. Included are songs of earlier days which have been passed down through the folk tradition, plus newer woks by young composers and authors who are adding so much to this young nation’s continuing musical culture. New or old, all these songs are rich in the unique flavor of Israeli music, drawing on the mixed strains of traditional Biblical, European Yiddish, Middle Eastern, Moorish-Spanish, and North African traditions.
Tom Glazer, whose folk singing has been delighting children (and adults) in the United States regularly for many years, has added a new multi-linguistic approach to his performances – each of the songs presented here is sung, in both Hebrew and English. The pronunciation of the Hebrew is in accordance with the Sephardic pronunciation most commonly found in Israel today; the English verses of each song are Glazer’s own. (We gratefully acknowledge the aid of Mrs. Zeffra Tatcher, well known as a children’s teacher of Hebrew, in researching and supervising authenticity and pronunciation.)
Whether you use this album as the most pleasant sort of language-learning aid ,as a fresh introduction to the music of another nation, or as an all-join-in-for-fun record, you’ll find that Tom Glazer has brought together the happiest sort of musical experience for all.
