QRS
QRS is the manufacture of piano rolls. The company was established in Chicago before 1916 by Melville Clark, the inventor of “marking piano.” This machine made possible the cutting of piano rolls that accurately captured performances. QRS soon also turned to jazz, especially after Max Kortlander joined its staff and it transferred its premises to New York around 1921. (The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz by Barry Kernfeld)
