About This Album –
This album offers one of the most unusual of modern-jazz sounds, as Herbie Mann plays the bass clarinet and really makes it swing. Noted as a master of unconventional sounds through his poll-winning flute playing and his success as a leader of Afro-Cuban groups, Herbie adds something new to his list of accomplishments with this rocking, deep-down LP. Featured with Mann is a group of top-rated West Coast stars who take their cue from the leader and avoid all trace of the excess “coolness” often associated with the California style. Particularly outstaying is the rich, firm-toned trumpet of Jack Sheldon.
