When good fellow get together … and get themselves into a good, easy-swinging groove …. The result is likely to be just such a jazz treat as you’ll discover on this album.

RED GARLAND is a pianist of varied accomplishments, but (like many musicians who have spent an appreciable amount of time working with Miles Davis) certainly one of his most rewarding grooves is the one he can get into when most of the material is medium-tempo and lyrical, when there are a couple of highly expressive and neverhysterical horns on hand and when there is a really solid rhythm team behind him.

All of these conditions were met at the recording session that produced this disc. There are four fine standard tunes here, plus an intriguing (and mysteriously titled) Pepper Adams original, and a mean slow-blues by Red.

There are two superior horns: the rich, full baritone sax of the aforementioned Mr. Adams; and the compelling trumpet – pretty and, at the same time, virile – of Blue Mitchell. And there is just about as good a bass-and-drums duo as any pianist could hope for: the unrelated Joneses, Sam and Philly Joe.

None of these men are in any need of having their biographies or accomplishments spelled out again for any

jazz listener I can think of. Nor does their music here call for any heavy-handed critical dissection. It’s a good groove,

that’s all; the purpose is enjoyment (for the players and the listeners alike), and that purpose is clearly fulfilled.
